Our team shares insights on engineering solutions for laboratories, operating theatres and precision manufacturing facilities.
Vibration-sensitive environments — such as hospital operating theatres, research laboratories, and precision manufacturing facilities — demand a level of structural rigour that goes well beyond standard building codes. Even minor floor vibrations can compromise surgical outcomes, invalidate scientific measurements, or damage sensitive equipment worth millions of dollars.
At Advanced Structural Consultancy, our approach begins with a thorough vibration assessment during the concept design phase. We use finite element modelling to predict the dynamic response of floor systems under a range of excitation scenarios — from foot traffic and mechanical plant to external sources such as road traffic and rail.
One of the most effective tools in our arsenal is the post-tensioned flat plate system, which allows us to tune the natural frequency of a floor slab away from the excitation frequencies likely to be encountered in service. By carefully selecting slab thickness, tendon layout, and column grid, we can achieve vibration performance targets that satisfy even the most demanding VC-A and VC-B criteria.
Damping is another critical variable. In many cases, we work closely with specialist acoustic and vibration consultants to incorporate tuned mass dampers or visco-elastic isolation mounts beneath sensitive equipment. Our structural detailing ensures these systems are properly integrated without compromising the overall structural integrity of the building.
Recent projects where we have applied these principles include a multi-storey research facility for a leading Melbourne university, a private hospital expansion in the inner suburbs, and a cleanroom manufacturing plant for a medical device company. In each case, early engagement with the structural engineer was key to achieving the required performance without significant cost premiums.
