Bridge engineering: lessons from major infrastructure

Bridge engineering sits at the intersection of structural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines — and it is precisely this complexity that makes it one of the most rewarding areas of practice for our team. Over the years, Advanced Structural Consultancy has been involved in a range of bridge and major infrastructure projects across Victoria, and each one has sharpened our understanding of what it takes to deliver these structures safely and efficiently.

Foundation design is often the most critical and uncertain aspect of a bridge project. Unlike buildings, where foundation loads are relatively well understood, bridge foundations must resist significant lateral forces from traffic, wind, and in some cases seismic loading. Our geotechnical team works closely with the structural engineers from day one to develop foundation solutions that are both technically robust and constructible within the constraints of the site.

One of the most important lessons we have learned is the value of thorough site investigation. On several projects, unexpected ground conditions encountered during construction have led to significant programme and cost overruns. Our standard practice is now to recommend a phased investigation approach — a preliminary desktop study followed by targeted intrusive investigation — to characterise the ground conditions as accurately as possible before design commences.

Temporary works are another area where bridge projects demand particular attention. The construction of a bridge typically involves a complex sequence of temporary states — falsework, formwork, launching gantries, and staged loading — each of which must be carefully analysed to ensure the structure remains safe throughout the construction process. Our temporary works team has developed considerable expertise in this area and works closely with contractors to develop safe and efficient construction methodologies.

Durability is a key consideration for bridge structures, which are expected to perform for 100 years or more with minimal maintenance. Our design approach prioritises robust detailing, appropriate cover to reinforcement, and the use of durable materials in aggressive environments such as marine and industrial settings. We also work with clients to develop asset management plans that identify maintenance requirements and inspection intervals over the full life of the structure.
